What is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is available is to help reduce the carbon footprint of homes and small business property throughout England and Wales by making it easier and more affordable to install low-carbon heating systems like heat pumps.
This is another alternative to improving your property’s EPC is through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.
Through this government scheme, eligible landlords can upgrade their property’s boiler to a more efficient model for no upfront cost.
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme can be applied to all privately rented properties and is available to landlords with an EPC rating of D or lower.
To be eligible for a grant through this scheme, you must own the property, and it must be in England or Wales.
The property must also have a valid Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) with no outstanding recommendations for insulation and an insulation capacity of up to 45kWth.

What's the eligibility criteria for BUS?
- You have a low Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of D or lower.
- You’re a Homeowner
- You’re a Landlord
- Property is within England and Wales
- The EPC has no recommendations for loft or cavity wall insulation
- Your property must have an installation capacity of up to 45kWth
- Your property must not be a new build property that the developer is still building.
- You must be in a financial position to be able for any contributions above the grant amount if applicable

- Universal Credit (UC)
- Warm Home Discount Rebate Scheme
- Working Tax Credit
Homeowners and Private Tenants who receive Universal Credit may qualify for a boiler grant to replace a broken mains gas boiler. They may also qualify for a central heating grant to install central heating for the first time.
